Description
The Provence region is steeped with history and famous for its excellent wines. Make the most of your trip by learning more about both aspects on this day long visit to the historical city of Avignon, once the home to the Papal Seat, followed by a visit to the Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards (meaning “The Pope’s new castle”). We will leave from Aix-en-Provence in the morning and drive to Avignon (just over 1 hour), where a private guide will take us on a tour of this historical city. Following a 3-course lunch with a glass of wine at the Carré du Palais restaurant, we will head to the Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards for a visit and wine tasting. Once largely reserved for the local bishops, these Burgundy wines received a reputational boost after they caught the attention of Pope John XXII, and subsequently became known as “Vin du Pape” (the Pope’s wine).
